A martensitic precipitation hardening steel, 17-4 PH stainless steel offers high strength combined with excellent corrosion resistance. 17-4 PH has good fabrication charictaristics and can be aged in a single step low temperature heat treatment which makes the alloy ideal for open die forgings. Anderson Shumaker has been forging 17-4 stainless steel since 1902. 17-4 SS forgings are available in a variety of shapes including rings, bars, blocks and more.
Applications: Used when high transverse strength is required. Valve parts, Paper mills, aircraft and power generation, chemical processing, nuclear and space craft.
Heat Treatment: Solution heat treatment, heat at 1900f +/- 25f (1038c +/- 14c) cool to below 90f (32c) to allow material to fully martensite. Small sections under 3” may be oil cooled, sections larger should be rapidly air cooled (fan cooling). Parts should not be used in this condition, they should be age hardened between 900f and 1150f. Toughness, impact strength as well as stress corrosion cracking may occur without aging.
Aging: All solution treated materials: Condition H-900 1hr and air cool. H-925 through H-1150 four hours +/- 25f and air cool. For condition H1150M 1400f +/- 15f 2 hours air cool, then heat at 1150f +/- 15f for four hours and air cool.
