We forge a lot of special projects at Anderson Shumaker, but none more so than our special machinery forged parts. Because special machinery’s requirements present unique challenges, these projects require a lot of upfront planning to ensure each part and process is perfect. Last week we discussed custom forging, so it only makes sense to follow-up with special machinery needs.

What is Special Machinery?

At Anderson Shumaker, we consider special machinery as any machinery that requires highly custom forgings outside of standard forge requests. This also includes machinery that requires special material. Special machinery industries include plastic injection molding, mining, pulp & paper, construction equipment (heavy equipment), transportation, and offshore drilling. Each of these industries has very specific requirements and standards for forged parts. However, Anderson Shumaker has provided parts for each of these industries over the years.

A Great Choice for Special Machine Needs

Because Anderson Shumaker maintains an inventory of 100+ grades of steel, we’re a great choice for special machinery needs. We can often start forging a project quickly with our in-stock materials. We also forge many grades not listed on stock list; if we don’t have it, we can get it quickly from one of our many grade steel suppliers. Like we said last week in our custom forgings post, we also specialize in short runs. This means that even if a customer needs just one piece, we can make it.

Forgings offers many benefits over casting, plate, or bars. These benefits include material integrity, nearer net shapes, superior grain flow, elimination of laminations and porosity, and a more predictable reaction to heat treatments. We also offer a number of cost-saving added value options such as heat treating, in-house testing, and machining (rough and finish).
