Open Die Forging
Open die forging (“free forging”) deforms metal between multiple dies. These dies hammer the metal to alter its dimensions. As a result, the metal achieves its desired shape. Open die forging results in better fatigue resistance, improved microstructure, continuous grain flow, increased strength, and less flashing. Most importantly, it offers overall cost savings.
Closed Die Forging
On the other hand, closed die forging (“impression forging”) compresses metal to fill enclosed dies. For example, as the dies press together, the metal fills the impressions. This causes the excess material to be squeezed out. Likewise, closed die forging results in better surface finish, no material limitation, tighter tolerances, and increases product strength.
